Chapter 5

_____

KATE

This guy’s persistent, I’ll give him that. But he’s also clearly loaded, and there’s nothing more embarrassing than talking money issues with somebody who has no concept of the idea.

So, why can’t I tear myself away from him?

I couldn’t wait to get him inside when he showed up again this morning. Or rather, he never left in the first place. What kind of man sleeps in a car all night to protect a couple of strangers anyway? Still, there’s something about Brent that sees my brain throw all logic out of the window.

If it was anyone else, I’d just tell them to go mind their own business. But as much as I’ve got a billion things on my mind, Brent’s managed to lodge himself in there too. “It’s just a tuition issue,” I say, finally relenting after he presses me for the umpteenth time. “There was enough for one Curver girl to finish college this year, and I wanted my sister to graduate.”

His face contorts into a look of pity, which is exactly what I wanted to avoid. Yet still, somehow, he manages to look sexy as hell, even when he’s feeling sorry for me. “That’s rough,” he says, giving my shoulder a squeeze that instantly saps the frustration out of me. His touch is warm and familiar. If nothing else, it makes me feel safe. Wanted. Something I haven’t felt since I ran from this place years ago after dad passed away.

But am I wanted? I mean, I kissed him last night. I can’t read this guy at all. “Thanks,” I say. “It’ll work out, though. I’m going to split my time between working on the retreat’s website and picking up some freelance development stuff. With any luck and enough saving, I’ll be graduating from Columbia next year.”

Brent says nothing, but his piercing eyes are still on me like a wolf on prey. My mouth runs dry, and a lump builds in my throat. I manage to force a swallow, biting at the corner of my lip as I break his stare. A near-inaudible ‘Hm’ escapes his lungs as Jen walks back out the adjoining bedroom, her hair still damp but fully dressed all the same.

“Interrupting something?” she quips, grabbing her car keys from a hook by the door and slinging on a coat. Brent releases my shoulder and straightens up.

Shut it.

“Hey, I’m sorry about earlier,” she says, talking directly to Brent. “I didn’t mean to come across as rude. I’m Jennifer, Kate’s sister. You gave us a scare this morning with the noise. I thought maybe the kids had come back.”

Brent adopts a much more serious expression, like a teen seeking approval from the girl’s mom before he can take her to prom. I laugh and he shoots a frustrated sideways glance, before extending his hand. “No, I’m sorry. The name’s Brent Jackson.”

Jen meets his handshake, “Just maybe ask next time you do something like that. I feel bad that we can’t afford to pay you back for all that equipment.
